Founders, managers and leaders in nonprofit settings regularly face significant organizational, resource and policy choices as they endeavor to meet a need, address and issue, solve a problem and generally serve the public good. In their efforts, they are faced with a significant challenges: competition for space, talent and resources as well as external threats, whether the ongoing recession, the aftermath of natural disasters like Super-storm Sandy, man-made disasters like Newtown, change in elected and appointed officials, Wall Streets impact on charitable earnings and giving, budgetary reductions in public financing of safety net programs, increased demands for results or social benefit impact and blurring of distinctions between the three sectors of government, business, and nonprofit.

The goal of this course is for students to gain a thorough understanding of the non-profit sector, its impact on the policies, lives and resources touched by the sector. Students will also gain the necessary background applicable to starting, working, managing or leading a non-profit organization. Must complete both parts to obtain certificate
