City College is offering an intensive paralegal studies program emphasizing the practical skills needed to succeed as a paralegal. The course of study is well-defined skills based program, allowing students to complete their studies in 5 months. By earning their certificate, students will be ready and confident to enter the paralegal field. The course will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6p.m. to 8:30p.m. Judges and lawyers who are experts in their fields will teach the lectures. On Mondays you will take Paralegal Skills, which will run for the entire 5 months and taught by Professor Michael Pocchia, who has been lecturing in paralegal programs for the past 12 years. This segment will cover the legal process, ethics, court structure, interviewing, investigations, research skills, document preparation, writing and analysis, Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw. On Wednesdays you will take a total of 5 substantive law classes throughout the semester, each meeting for 4 weeks. These will include Torts, Contracts, New York Procedure, Criminal Law, Family Law or Immigration. During the semester there will be a resume and job interview class, a field trip to the New York County criminal court to watch arraignments and classroom sessions in the computer lab to practice online legal research, and a field trip to a law library to learn about law books first hand.
Students will take a total of five (5) substantive law classes during this section, each meeting for four (4) weeks. These will include Torts, Contracts, New York Procedure, Criminal Law, and Immigration Law Prerequisite: PARALEGAL SKILLS
